A friend of mine pointed out that if I’m going to make accessories with nods to fandoms, I should do something for anime/manga as well. And she was absolutely right! So here is my first segue into jewelry/accessories for anime.Â
I know red/white/blue isn’t the most original color scheme, but the uniform I remember Sailor Moon wearing featured these colors. I believe in the 1990s anime SailorS, her uniform was pink/white/blue, and I vaguely recall seeing her in a uniform that was mostly pink. But I digress. For the sake of this collection, and because this is the color scheme I associate with Sailor Moon, I stand by the red/white/blue.
This was also my first try at lanyards, so figuring out closures and covering up the ends was a work-in-progress. Hence why there is a piece of red cotton sewn over the ends, as shown in the first photo. I have since gotten better at stitching the ends together, but as I am inherently a lazy/overachieving procrastinator, I have decided to leave the designs as I originally made them.
The fabric is your basic red and white cotton. For this particular lanyard, the dark blue is a soft mesh nylon. However if I need to make more, I will use a jersey knit of the same color, because I think I used the rest of the mesh on this design. No regrets, though!
One thing that stands out for me about these lanyards is how soft and comfortable they are. I’ve never liked traditional lanyards because of that stiff material they use; it make’s the hairs on my neck stand on end. But think about your favorite t-shirt that is so well-loved and the perfect softness, and that’s what this feels like.
A bonus is something my daughter discovered, which is that they also make great sensory toys. Don’t worry; no one will be receiving the one she has been chewing on and stretching. Can I put toddler-proof as an aspect? Because she’s had a ball stretching and chewing on this thing and it shows no signs of wear and tear.
